On July 26, 2023, New Jersey’s Governor signed into law legislation that directs the State Board of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture to develop and adopt rules and regulations that prohibit the confinement of breeding pigs and calves raised for veal in a manner that prevents them from standing up, lying down, fully extending their limbs, or turning around freely. The calves covered by the rules must also be able to groom themselves naturally and have visual contact with other calves. The act took effect immediately.
